The songs: 1. Rock
the Big House Down Ryan Michael Galloway is a man on a mission. His goal is to lead the charge of musicians who want to wrestle control of popular music from the record business. Music has only been exploited as a commercial, mass-marketed product for about 90 years. Considering the fact that for 10,000 years, music has been produced by creative individuals in caves, tents, hovels, and garages, it's amazing how quickly a bunch of greedy business-types could water-down, commoditize and generally devalue music in all but the narrowest of genres: basic pop. And all while leaving the musicians and performers themselves with little more than leftover crumbs. Exploiting all the freedom of independent status, Mr. Galloway returns with another eclectic collection of rock and folk-jazz tunes. The classic singer-songwriter core still overrides this release, with an intimate "whisper in your ear" delivery. Still, this EP has plenty of kick, starting off with the titular Rock the Big House Down and followed by the funky I Can't Get There--complete with bass, sax and guitar solo rides. The Full Moon Loves You musically quotes some familiar pop and rock songs while introducing a fresh lyric hook idea and over-the-top harmonies.
In keeping with his personal mission, Rock the Big House Down (the track) is a campy indie-music anthem with a Stones-like drive and big production. By far the most ambitious recording of the collection, the song includes a large roster of players, a horn-section and female trio-style background vocals (it's all Ron Logan, but trust us, he didn't sing it in drag). Starting with a basic power-trio arrangement, you'll smile each time a new layer is introduced as it all builds to a huge rock-crescendo at the final chords. If its infectious riff is hard to get out of your head, the hook is even more of an earworm; and the overall effect is something that just won't let you sit still. The EP settles down for the last two songs with the beautiful I Know What I Know and a bare-bones tour de force of voice and guitar in If God Could Sleep. The former contains tight, lush harmonies and a low-key track, while the latter takes about as many chances as singer-songwriter can with an honest nowhere-to-hide rendition. Mr. Galloway is often compared with James Taylor, and these two songs do nothing to dispel those comparisons. However, the listener will hear other strong influences including America, CSN, and Cat Stevens. Older fans are likely to be transported back a few years. Rock the Big House down is definitely a step up in the artist's evolution and the growth of the production team. Recorded at Ron Logan's Texas studio, affectionately known as "Shabby Road," it is obvious that the recordist's techniques have grown and the team's production skills have been honed. A number of the songs have so many layers that the mix would challenge the best in the business. Mr. Logan's deft hand (and ears) steadily sort out the layers in the wall-of-sound and still manage to produce a record with "alive-ness" and spirit. In addition to recording, Mr. Galloway continues to build his brand of music-career books and DVDs. Gigster Clinics Live Sound--a DVD and book combination--represents his latest multi-media release. The DVD was produced and edited by filmmaker C. Aaron Moore, and shot by videographer Steve Brown. Mr. Galloway's latest book (as of this writing) is a jam-packed collection of publicity tips, The Band Promotion Turbo-Charger, which has received kudos from a number of indie music business and publicity authors and coaches.
